Getting To Know Helichrysum

Tiny yet powerful, little, yellow flowers of helichrysum.

More About Benefits of This Powerful Plant

Background
With a name that means ‘everlasting’ or ‘immortal’, it is no wonder people turn to helichrysum to protect their skin. A small, yellow, flowering herb that is native to the Mediterranean, and is a member of the sunflower family. Renowned for its lush and spicy scent. Even more important than the wonderful smell is the superior soothing and healing benefits of this multitasking, little plant.

Science
Research of helichrysum is currently limited, however the scientific community is starting to pay closer attention. Preliminary studies have suggested numerous benefits. Reputed for its rich antioxidant properties, scientists have been studying the antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties of helichrysum. Reported benefits include helping to soothe dryness and irritation, softening the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, minimizing acne and blemishes, and overall assisting to rejuvenate and revitalize the complexion.

Why We Love It
Here at Willowdale Botanicals, we are quite the fans of the humble Helichrysum. So much so that we grow our very own USDA certified organic helichrysum right here on our farm in Lewisburg, Ohio. We use the ultra-clean helichrysum in our luxuriously silky Helichrysum Nightly Renewal Cream. Along with helichrysum, this powerful moisturizer contains other proven skin saviors including elderberry extract, sea buckthorn oil, Melissa extract, white tea, ultra-softening mango seed butter, and rosehip oil. The result is a lightweight yet deeply hydrating fluid. Rich with a targeted fusion of natural, plant-based alpha and beta carotenes filled with vitamins C, D, and E that help restore and soften your skin overnight.

We may be biased, yet we are sure this dynamic Helichrysum Nightly Renewal Cream is exactly what your skin needs to wake up rejuvenated and radiant. Check out the many benefits of Helichrysum Nightly Renewal Cream and our entire collection of small-batch, fresh, green beauty here

Inside Willowdale Botanicals

Getting to Know Our Ingredients

Made in small batches, every Willowdale Botanicals product is packed with as many raw ingredients from our farm as possible. In particular, we look to the herbs helichrysum, lemon balm, rosemary, chamomile, and lavender.  Known for delivering amazing healing and regenerative properties to the skin, as well as sublime natural fragrance. We also grow these herbs organically, and each are featured in one of our key products—even our newest product, Gel Hand Sanitizer

A brief overview of our fab five botanicals:

  • Helichrysum (Helichrysum sanguineum):  Sometimes called Everlasting, this fragrant herb has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and is also meant to help keep skin feeling soft and hydrated, and many even help keep acne bumps at bay.  Look for it in our Helichrysum Nightly Renewal Cream.
  • Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis): With a delicate lemon scent, the name of this herb says it all. We use lemon balm in our Melissa & Rosemary Soothing Toner, where it helps fight free radical damage, soothe irritation and redness, and keep skin feeling refreshed and hydrated.
  • Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis): When you think of rosemary you may think of the kitchen, but it’s also great for skincare, as well. Full of free radical fighting antioxidants, rosemary may also help balance oiliness and keeps skin looking firm and toned. Find it in our Antioxidant Moisturizing Elixir.
  • Chamomile (Matricaria Recutita):  You likely know chamomile as a delicious tea that helps calm and relax, perfect for nighttime. It’s also an amazing herb for skin, where it may help brighten and clarify the complexion, and soothe redness.  We use it in our Deep Spa Cleansing & Softening Oil
  • Lavender (Lavandula angustafolia): Ahh lavender…this amazing herb with beautiful purple flowers and a heady, robust scent has been used in skincare for centuries. Reputed to have anti-inflammatory properties, lavender may also help reduce the appearance of redness/blotchiness in the skin, and soften the severity of acne or other scars. It’s also great for healing and softening dry skin, which is why it’s one of the four botanicals we use in our cult-favorite Heal & Seal Sea Buckthorn Balm. Trust us, your winter dry heels and elbows will never feel softer.

In the Media

South Dayton Lifestyle Magazine sat down with Dr. Catherine Harrison to discuss skincare tips and tricks featured in their April 2020 magazine.

Green. Natural. Organic. Plant-based. These are words that have moved beyond just food and diet, as more Americans are concerned about not only what goes in their bodies, but also what goes on them and is absorbed by the skin. Two years ago, nearly half of American women who used skincare products reported looking for those labeled as natural or organic, according to market research—the chief concern being avoiding “toxins.” However, toxins aren’t well defined, said Dr. Catherine Harrison, a local scientist turned natural skincare brand founder.

Sustainability in Our Products and Processes

Our first commitment to you is to to make excellent quality, highly effective products that make a striking difference in the appearance of your skin, and that you take delight in using.  Our second commitment is to use the highest standards for ethical and sustainable ingredients and methods, and to fully disclose those choices so you can feel confident in every possible way that Willowdale Botanicals products are not only amazingly effective, but also great for the planet and the people living on it.

Ingredients We Produce On-Farm

Willowdale Regenerative Farm produces the hydrosols (plant waters) that we use in Willowdale Botanicals products, in a repurposed stainless steel whiskey still.  The farm grows USDA Certified Organic herbs including rosemary, lavender, melissa, helichrysum and chamomile, and distills USDA Certified Organic hydrosols from herbs we grow or buy from other Certified Organic growers.

Ingredients We Buy

For ingredients we purchase, we consider organic certification, but also other components of sustainability, bearing in mind that many small and local producers who adhere to regenerative farming practices aren’t able to obtain organic certification due to the expense or time needed to maintain records and complete ongoing paperwork.  We also purchase some sustainably wild crafted ingredients.

Ecocert

We use only Ecocert approved preservatives, additives and actives.  If you see a chemical name on one of our cartons, you can be confident it’s safe, effective, and approved for use in cosmetics by one of the most stringent natural skin care and cosmetics regulatory standards available.

*Exception in 2020: we are currently producing a 70% alcohol Gel Hand Sanitizer for the duration of the current health crisis, and no Ecocert alternative gelling agent is available.

We firmly believe that farming isn’t “sustainable” if it doesn’t sustain the people who do it.  We offer flexible hours and paid time off.  We all value a wholesome and pleasant work environment – being able to exercise, smell the fresh herbs growing outside, snuggle the friendly sheep that keep the fields weeded. Being committed to each other as individuals with dignity, and extending that concern to all the people we do business with, is a vital component of our philosophy.

Packaging

Most of our bottles and jars are Miron(tm) violet glass, which we choose because it provides the highest level of protection for the potency of the high quality botanical ingredients we use.  We recycle these jars and bottles, and encourage you to either reuse them yourself (use the jars to save seeds, use the bottles for lovely flower vases, etc) or to save up and return them to us — we’ll send you something nice in return.  When we use plastic bottles or metal bottles or tins, those are 100% recyclable.
